Bars & Clubs: Hinder comes to the Chance in Poughkeepsie

Sandy Tomcho
“We always look forward to the summer months with all the festivals and the fairs,” Mike Rodden said. “As for right now, in January and February, we're gonna keep touring with My Darkest Days and Saving Abel and they'll probably put a fourth band on.”

On Tuesday, Hinder's third album, "All American Nightmare," was released after months of steady airplay. While in Hartford, Conn., for a gig, the guys were definitely keeping watch to see how the album was charting.

"We check in on it a little bit. We've been looking at iTunes to see what songs are doing what single-wise. We're a little more curious on this one than we've been for the last two," said bassist Mike Rodden. "We're really stoked about it, and now most of us have iPhones, so we can check up on that stuff with just a click. We're a little more proactive with the checking. We don't have to wait for phone calls. Right now, it's No. 6 on iTunes as an album and it's the No. 1 rock album. It's doing good so far."

The Oklahoma band, which consists of Rodden, Austin Winkler (vocals), Mark King (guitar), Joe "Blower" Garvey (guitar) and Cody Hanson (drums), has had five Billboard Top 10 Hot Mainstream Rock singles with "Get Stoned," "Lips of an Angel," "How Long," "Use Me" and its latest hit, "All American Nightmare," the title track of the current album.

Go! reporter Sandy Tomcho spoke with Rodden about the new album and live shows.

For people who haven't purchased the album yet, what are some of the highlights?

I think every song on there is pretty diverse, which is really what we set out to do. Some people might put the record on and think of it as a throwback album, a tribute to all the bands we grew up listening to. Some people might like the ballads. It's just a little bit of everything, so everyone will get into it.

When you guys write songs, do you know they're going to be huge?

We don't put anything on the record that we don't believe in and truly love. Certain songs, yeah, stand out and we think, "Yeah, this could be pretty big." We kind of leave it up to the fans.

How are the live shows?

It's kind of tough on this one. The last album cycle was easy because we only had two albums worth of material, but this one we're having to work in three albums. It's kind of tough, at first, coming up with the set list, but we split it down the middle. We got about half the songs from this album and the other half from the last two.
