Iconic Cuban singer/songwriter Silvio Rodriguez is set to embark on his first U.S. tour in over three decades, news that has gotten coverage in major media outlets in the U.S. and throughout the world. Rodriguez will visit Oakland, California, on June 11th for a Paramount Theatre performance in which he will revisit over 40 years of musical trajectory and introduce his new album “Segunda Cita”. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, May 20th at 11am.
Silvio Rodriguez, along with Pablo Milanés and Noel Nicola, founded Nueva Trova Cubana (New Cuban Song), a musical and social movement that became an introspective and poetical window into social struggles in Cuba and Latin America of the 1960’s and 70’s. This movement revolutionized Cuban music, which up to that time was primarily known for its rhythms, and made his songs instant classics.
Nueva Trova put Cuban music in the map as a staple of socially engaged and intelligent song. He recorded his first album in 1975 but it was after the 1981 release of Unicornio that Silvio became an even bigger influence all over Latin America. In most albums, Silvio serves as the producer and arranger for the songs, which he sings guitar only and silken vocals. He has participated in countless festivals, gave concerts, and collaborated with other American troubadours.
Silvio Rodríguez’s most important distinction is the masterfully crafted lyrics in the hundreds of songs he has recorded. He has written passionately about love, politics, his Homeland, longing, life, death, among other topics. The groundbreaking blend of profound lyrics and unique acoustic melodies has made Silvio a world-renowned icon of Cuban culture. He continues to be an inspiration and a voice for those who seek to decipher the inexplicable, find beauty in everyday life and believe that a different world is possible.
